Natural Remedies for Common Baby Ailments

Rhinopharyngite.jpg

Kids wouldn’t be kids if they didn’t get sick once in a while. Recently my daughter, who just turned 8 months old, got a cold and it stressed me out looking at her sad watery eyes, and hearing her phlegmy cough. While it can be a bit nerve wracking when your baby or toddler gets the sniffles, is teething, or has gas, I always feel a bit better if I try giving my kids a natural remedy for their ailments before I need to pull out the big guns. It’s just one less thing to worry about!

While it is always best to call or see your pediatrician when you have a question, as I did with my baby’s yucky sounding cough, here are some natural remedies to have on hand for some common ailments in both babies and toddlers.

Ailment #1:  Infant Fussiness & Colic

Mommy’s Bliss Gripe Water

This stuff works! I used it with both my daughters as babies, and it almost always calmed them down a bit. It must taste okay too, because both of them lapped it up happily! All ages. $9.00 Buy here

Ailment #2:  Teething

Wink Naturals Cool Gums Teething Gel

My first baby never had any teething issues, but my 2nd baby now has been teething since her third month and I don’t see an end in sight. The worst of it seems to strike at nighttime, and the only two things that seems to help her a bit is giving her natural teething gel, and holding her in my arms while walking around the house (for hours = exhausting)! FYI~This brand contains no Belladonna. For children under 2 years of age, first consult with a Physician or Healthcare Provider. $5.99 Buy here

Ailment #3:  Gas

Little Remedies Gas Relief Drops

This seemed to help my little wee one when she would get a bit of gas after a feeding. Eventually, she ended up needing a prescribed med for gas, but that’s because she had some intolerance to dairy when she was an infant. It has eventually faded, and she doesn’t need anything now. All ages. $7.94 Buy here

The Windi

A natural solution for colic, constipation, and other gas-related problems, The Windi works instantly and does not require ingestion of any drops or medication. The Windi is a single-use catheter that helps babies get rid of excess gas. $15.00 Buy here

Ailment #4:  Stuffy Nose & Congestion

Kid’s Xlear Nasal Spray

This all-natural saline nasal spray helps to gently clean, soothe, and moisturize your little one’s nasal passages when congested. One tip: lay baby down on the changing table and put a drop in each nostril. It’s always a bit hard to wrestle my baby down to administer the drops, but the bottle is very easy to squeeze and the drops do come out easily which is helpful, and it really helps to loosen all of the mucus before I use the NoseFrida contraption (below) a few minutes later. All ages. $5.59 Buy here

NoseFrida

Nosefrida The Snotsucker, the doctor developed and doctor recommended nasal aspirator is the new standard in keeping babies naturally snot free. Ingeniously simple Swedish design features a tube that is placed against the nostril (not inside). One tip: use the saline drops mentioned above beforehand to help loosen any hardened mucus before sucking. And keep in mind, you must suck really hard to get out the snot, but it works amazingly! My baby put up a struggle the first few times, and then she acquiesced a bit more with each use, I think mainly because it made her feel better afterwards, and she got used to it. All ages. $15.00 Buy here

Ailment #5: Coughing

Zarbee’s Naturals Baby Cough Syrup

Zarbee’s Baby Cough is a safe and effective remedy that calms coughs and soothes irritated throats. Their baby formula does not contain any honey so it’s safe for the wee ones. This drug-free product means your family can make it through your day without the unwanted side effects and grogginess of alcohol or dyes. It seemed to help my daughter a bit with lessening her cough, but it’s hard to tell by how much. Safe for babies 2 months+. $6.98 Buy here

Ailment #6: Eczema

babyganics’ Eczema Care Skin Protectant

This super nourishing eczema cream is clinically proven to give your baby long-lasting relief by increasing and improving skin hydration and by protecting and supporting skin barrier function. It’s formulated with all kinds of feel-good and do-good ingredients like colloidal oatmeal and NeoNourish® — their unique blend of 100% natural seed oils to help protect and nourish baby’s sensitive skin. My baby suffers from eczema and it works if applied generously each day, and after giving her a bath (every 3 days). Bonus: it’s not as expensive as some of the other eczema treatments out there and just as effective! All ages. $9.99 Buy here

Ailment #7: Cradle Cap

Bella B Bee Gone Cradle Cap Baby Shampoo

Gentle Naturals® cradle cap treatment is a light non-greasy formula made with natural ingredients:  Calendula and vitamins D and E. It helps remove baby’s cradle cap with its unique brush and lotion combination kit, which helps to gently exfoliate and brush away crusty flakes while moisturizing and soothing baby’s scalp. $9.87 Buy here

Ailment #8: Diaper Rash

Badger Diaper Cream

Every baby gets a case of diaper rash at least once during babyhood and I have tried several natural and organic creams over the years. This one stands out as one of my favorites, it is really thick so it takes a bit of patience to spread it around, but once it’s in place, it lasts for a long time and by the next changing, the redness is gone! Calendula extract is rich in antioxidants and vitamins and has a calming effect on babies. Zinc Oxide is a safe mineral powder that helps baby’s irritated skin heal faster. Awesome! $12.99 Buy here
